How to start a daycare with no money

Best Practices

12/23/2021 | Evan Klinger

Has your joy of working with children and desire to serve your local community-led you to question: How do I start a daycare on my own? Now, more than ever, your service is needed and we will show you how any driven person can start a daycare with no money.

It’s not every day a person starts their own business and hears: “Don’t worry!  There is plenty of help out there for you.”  But when it comes to starting a daycare, there actually is daycare assistance out there with resources to get you on your feet.

If you choose to start a non-profit daycare there are a plethora of federal, state, and private grants (tax-free) that are available. If you are starting a daycare center in a town that has less than 20,000 people living in it, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has a program that will fund 75% of everything it takes to build and run your facility. More information on applying for the program can be found here:

Starting a daycare center is such a vital part of how we build a strong community that if you choose to run a for-profit daycare center, there are still hundreds of grants available to fund and pay for the daycare center’s operating costs. The United States Department of Commerce gives out over $500 billion ANNUALLY and starting a daycare center is a top priority. More information on applying for the grants can be found here:

Starting a daycare center can be mentally stimulating for you and it is great to think outside the box when it comes to children and education. Daycare centers are eligible for Small Business Innovation Research Program grants that are awarded to revolutionary ideas that will have a lasting impact on the daycare center industry. More information how to apply for this grant can be found here:

During this daycare startup time, you will need to make sure you have completed this checklist of licensing and compliance:

  1. Make sure you have a High School degree or GED
  2. Get certified in First Aid and CPR
  3. Obtain a Food Handler certification
  4. Obtain a General Business License
  5. Obtain a Group Family Child Care License
  6. Obtain a Child Care Director’s License
  7. Obtain a Health and Safety permit

Once the grants start rolling in for your daycare center, you can start to focus on the day to day operations of your facility.  You can build a schedule filled with activities for your daycare children including Arts and Crafts, Music, Dancing and maybe just blowing bubbles!  A set of learning activities at your daycare facility will help your children, who may range from age 0 to 5, get the most out of their time spent with you.

Like any small business, your clients are what matter most and to start a daycare center it is kids and parents that you will hear from!  Listen to the parents who send their kids to your daycare center and put yourselves in their shoes when you speak with them about your vision for starting the daycare.

The best way to keep the community within your daycare connected is by using the Playground ecosystem for your facility. Playground is a one-stop-shop that will enable your parents and families to communicate seamlessly with questions, answers, suggestions, and feedback.

By investing in the right tool for your daycare center, the families in your community will see that you have reliable tools to stay organized and efficient. By using Playground’s tools, a daycare facility manager is sending the message that quality is what matters at your daycare center.

Parents and families want important information available and accessible right away.  By using Playground and making your clients’ lives easier, your life will become so much easier! You can custom tailor your online environment to let parents save time and find anything they might need or want to do quickly. The parents at your daycare will appreciate all that you and Playground’s app does for them.

You have taken all of the professional steps to get your daycare going with little or no money - it’s time to make an investment in a quality product that solidifies your place as a pillar of your community! You built it all on your own. Let us help you keep it.
