America’s Largest Private ECE Provider, Corporate-Owned and Publicly Traded

KinderCare Learning Centers was founded on July 14, 1969, when Perry Mendel opened the first center in Montgomery, Alabama. More than five decades later, KinderCare has grown into the largest private community-based early childhood education provider in the United States, operating 2,695 centers across 40 states and the District of Columbia as of mid-2026.

Unlike Goddard or TLE, KinderCare is not a franchise system. Every center is corporate-owned and operated by KinderCare Learning Companies, Inc. The company has operated under several parent entities over the years, including Knowledge Universe and KinderCare Education, before being renamed KinderCare Learning Companies in 2021. In October 2024, the company completed an initial public offering on the NYSE under the ticker KLC. Partners Group has remained the largest shareholder since 2015. The company is led by CEO Tom Wyatt.

KinderCare’s 2,695 total locations are split between 1,567 early childhood education (ECE) centers and 1,128 Champions before- and after-school sites. Champions operates in 29 states plus D.C. ECE centers serve children from 6 weeks through kindergarten entry; Champions extends care to school-age children through age 12, including summer camp programming.

Early Foundations®, A Research-Based Curriculum

KinderCare’s proprietary Early Foundations® curriculum is designed for ECE classrooms from infancy through kindergarten entry. Built around developmental milestones, the curriculum spans seven domains: language and literacy, social-emotional development, cognitive development, executive function, physical and motor skills, wellness, and creative arts. The framework emphasizes ongoing developmental assessment and includes support for dual-language learners.

KinderCare also operates Crème de la Crème, a premium ECE brand within the company’s portfolio. Crème uses an enrichment rotation model featuring dedicated labs for STEM, art, technology, and music. Champions, the school-age division, operates its own distinct out-of-school time curriculum designed for before-school, after-school, and summer programs.

Ages served: 6 weeks through 12 years. ECE centers cover infants, toddlers, preschool, and kindergarten programs. Champions serves school-age children in before- and after-school and summer settings.

Accreditation, Scale, and Workplace Recognition

KinderCare states it has among the highest numbers of third-party accredited centers in the industry. Accreditation is center-level and granted through organizations including NAEYC, the National Accreditation Commission, and NECPA. Not all locations carry accreditation, but KinderCare’s scale means its accredited center count is among the largest in absolute terms.

As of 2025, KinderCare has received nine consecutive Gallup Exceptional Workplace Awards, a distinction the company claims makes it the first child care provider to receive this recognition. Parent Google ratings vary by center and commonly fall between 3.5 and 4.7, reflecting the quality and staffing variance typical of large, corporate-operated networks.

Programs, Access, and How to Connect

CACFP / CCDF: KinderCare participation in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and the Child Care Development Fund (CCDF) varies by center and state. Many centers participate where eligible. Families should confirm subsidy and food program availability with their local center or enrollment coordinator.

Contact: Families can find and enroll at their nearest center through kindercare.com, or call the family support line at 1-888-525-2780 (Care@KinderCare.com). The Playground team has combined decades of experience in the child care industry, ranging from care itself to business management to subsidy administration to strategic marketing. In addition to creating a variety of free resources for the child care industry, the Playground team produces Early Childhood Investigations webinars to help child care directors and teachers earn professional development credit and valuable experience. Additionally, founders Daniel Andrews and Sasha Reiss co-authored the book “More Than Tuition: Financial Leadership and Growth Marketing for Early Childhood Programs” and frequently speak at industry events including for NECPA, NCCA, AELL, and soon NAEYC.
