A Madison Nonprofit Preschool Since 1971
Preschool of the Arts has operated in Madison, Wisconsin, since 1971. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit at 11 Science Court, licensed for 205 children ages 1 to 5, and open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The school is closely tied to the Reggio Emilia movement in Wisconsin. Its leadership chaired the steering committee that brought The Wonder of Learning, the touring exhibition from the schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy, to Madison in 2019.
Reggio Emilia-Inspired, Built on the Arts
The program is Reggio Emilia inspired. It starts from the belief that every child has a right to an artful life and many ways, or “a hundred languages,” of expressing what they know. Classroom projects grow out of children’s own questions and are documented as they go: clay work, yarn dyeing, mark-making, and close observation of nature all show up in the school’s published project notes.
Ages served: 1 through 5 years.
Accreditation and Quality Ratings
Preschool of the Arts is accredited by the City of Madison and holds a five-star YoungStar rating, the top level of Wisconsin’s child care quality rating system.

The Playground team has combined decades of experience in the child care industry, ranging from care itself to business management to subsidy administration to strategic marketing. In addition to creating a variety of free resources for the child care industry, the Playground team produces Early Childhood Investigations webinars to help child care directors and teachers earn professional development credit and valuable experience. Additionally, founders Daniel Andrews and Sasha Reiss co-authored the book “More Than Tuition: Financial Leadership and Growth Marketing for Early Childhood Programs” and frequently speak at industry events including for NECPA, NCCA, AELL, and soon NAEYC.
