A National Franchise Built on Local Ownership

Founded in 1988, The Goddard School has grown into one of the largest early childhood education franchise systems in the United States, with more than 680 licensed locations across 38 states and Washington, D.C. Unlike corporate child care chains, every Goddard School is independently owned and operated by a local franchisee, typically an on-site owner with a direct stake in the quality and culture of their campus.

The system is managed by Goddard Systems, LLC, headquartered in King of Prussia, PA. In 2022, Goddard Systems was acquired by private-equity firm Sycamore Partners from Wind River Holdings. The company is not publicly traded. Darin Harris serves as CEO.

Wonder of Learning®, An Inquiry-Based Approach

The Goddard School’s curriculum centers on an exclusive inquiry-based program called Wonder of Learning®, built on the earlier play-based F.L.EX.® (Fun Learning Experience) framework. The approach is child-led and teacher-guided, structured around weekly “big questions” that spark hands-on exploration, collaborative discovery, and deeper thinking.

Core pillars include social-emotional learning, STEAM, literacy, the arts, and individualized learning goals. The framework draws on developmental theory while placing the teacher-child relationship at the center of every classroom experience. The Goddard School is a secular, non-religious organization.

Ages served: Typically 6 weeks through 6 years (infant through pre-K), with kindergarten offered at participating locations. Some franchise descriptions also allow school-age and after-school programming up to approximately age 10, though that is not the core national offering.

Recognized as a Leading Franchise System

Many Goddard School locations hold Cognia® accreditation, a nationally recognized quality mark highlighted by the company. Some individual schools also hold NAEYC accreditation at the school level (not system-wide).

The Goddard School ranked #68 on the Entrepreneur Franchise 500 in 2026, its 28th consecutive year on the list, and was inducted into the Franchise 500 Hall of Fame in 2025. Additional recognitions include: #58 on the Franchise Times Top 400 (2025), Franchise Business Review Top 200 Franchises (2026, based on franchisee satisfaction), and the FRANdata TopScore FUND Award (2026, 930/950).

Parent satisfaction: The company reported a 2025 family NPS of 84 and an average 9.46/10 likelihood to recommend. Individual school Google ratings commonly fall in the mid-to-high 4s when review volume is sufficient, though they vary widely by owner and campus. Employee reviews (Glassdoor/Indeed) are more mixed, typically in the low-3s, common across center-based child care.

Programs, Access, and How to Connect

Subsidy & food programs: CACFP and CCDF participation varies by individual school and state. Many Goddard Schools are primarily private-pay; some franchisees accept subsidies and vouchers where the location has enrolled in those programs.

The Playground team has combined decades of experience in the child care industry, ranging from care itself to business management to subsidy administration to strategic marketing. In addition to creating a variety of free resources for the child care industry, the Playground team produces Early Childhood Investigations webinars to help child care directors and teachers earn professional development credit and valuable experience. Additionally, founders Daniel Andrews and Sasha Reiss co-authored the book “More Than Tuition: Financial Leadership and Growth Marketing for Early Childhood Programs” and frequently speak at industry events including for NECPA, NCCA, AELL, and soon NAEYC.
