Intro: November is a great time to teach your preschoolers about Thanksgiving! There are many fun and educational activities that you can do to help them learn about this holiday. In this blog post, we will share some of our favorite Thanksgiving lesson plans for preschoolers. These lessons are both fun and educational, and they will help your children learn all about Thanksgiving!

  1. TURKEY! Starting off with the obvious... no November lesson plan is complete without a turkey activity somewhere throughout the month. Besides endless turkey hand-crafts, one great way to incorporate education is by reading about turkeys with your kids. After all, what says Thanksgiving more than a big ol' turkey? Check out our favorite turkey books here!

  2. Corn- Such a versatile subject for a Thanksgiving lesson. It can be used for everything from math to art! For example, did you know that there are over 3,000 types of corn? That's a lot of corn! Use this fact to help your students with math concepts like grouping and sorting.

  3. Leaves- This another great lesson plan for November packed with crafts and nature related crafts. For example, gather one leaf each on an adventure outdoors, bring them back to sort by similarities in the classroom. This is a great opportunity to visualize leaf variety and leaf cycles through seasons changes while educating students. Check out more of our seasonal activities Here!

  4. Pumpkins- This fall vegetable represents giving thanks and embraces the holiday season. Both educational and artistic, there are endless possibilities with a pumpkin lesson plan. For example, a pumpkin doesn't have to go to waste after Halloween! Instead, use it as a science experiment for your students. They can track the changes in color and shape of the pumpkin throughout the month as it decomposes.

  5. Generosity and Giving Back- Talk to your students about what it means to give back and what it means to be generous. Have a discussion about people or organizations that give back and why it's important. Using books and videos to help explain what it means to give back will help your kids understand. Consider this video about Clarence the fox learning about the joy of giving.

This is also a great opportunity to talk about the different types of birds that migrate and why they do it. Your kids will be fascinated and excited for the change in season!

  8. Family- Thanksgiving is a great time to talk about family with your students. You can have them bring in photos of their families and talk about what makes them special. This lesson plan for preschool may be sensitive to some students so be mindful of their understanding of family beforehand. This is also a great opportunity to talk about the different types of families that exist and how they all celebrate Thanksgiving in their own way.

For example, you can have your students collect acorns and then plant them. They can then track the growth of their trees over the course of the year.

You can have your students make Thanksgiving cards for people in their lives that they are thankful for.
